Born into a family of musicians, he won the first prize in Violin and Chamber Music at the Paris Conservatory aged 12. He met Stern, Oïstrakh, Fournier and Boulanger in the United States. Francescatti invited him to record Bach’s Concerto for two violins with him for classical music record label Deutsche Grammophon. Professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1985 to 2011, he has played with many American, European and Japanese orchestras conducted by Maazel, Prêtre and Bernstein. He has partnered with chamber musicians Stern, Rostropovitch, Pressler, Rampal, Perahia and Tortelier
