Daniel Smith

Young Australian conductor Daniel Smith is rapidly gaining international fame following First Prize, Golden Baton and Orchestra's Choice at the Fitelberg International Conducting Competition, as well as Second Prize at the prestigious Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition, both in 2012.

First Australian conductor on the podium of the Mariinsky Orchestra, he recently made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the hr-Sinfonieorchester di Frankfurt, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Danish National Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra of the RAI of Turin, the Göteborgs Symfoniker, the RTE Symphony of Dublin, among many others. 2013 marks Daniel Smith's debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and at the Mariinsky Theater with A trip to Reims. Daniel Smith's success as an opera director is the result of his experience as assistant conductor at the Rome Opera House which allowed him to specialize in the traditional repertoire. In 2017 he conducted L'elisir d’amore at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, followed by La Traviata in 2018 and the debut at Opera Australia in Il viaggio a Reims. In March 2016, Daniel Smith inaugurated his foundation: "The Daniel Smith 'Gift of Music' Foundation".

He studied conducting with Jorma Panula, Neeme and Paavo Järvi, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Hugh Wolff and Peter Gülke. He holds a Master of Music from the Sydney Conservatory of Music and received scholarships from Trinity College London, the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen and the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. Since 2017 Daniel Smith has been appointed Principal Guest Director of the Carlo Felice Theater in Genoa.
